Chitrakote Falls, near Jagdalpur in Bastar district, is often called the 'Niagara of India' for its horseshoe shape and thundering flow. It's one of the most rewarding day trips you can plan from Raipur if you have a couple of days to spare.
The best time to visit is right after the monsoon, from October to January, when the falls are at their fullest and the surrounding forest is lush and green. Summer months see a much thinner flow.
The drive from Raipur to Jagdalpur covers roughly 300 km and takes about 6-7 hours by road, so most travellers either start early and make it a long day trip or break the journey with an overnight stay in Jagdalpur before continuing to the falls the next morning.
Since a large part of the route runs through ghat sections and forest roads, we'd recommend an SUV with an experienced driver who knows the highway well, rather than a hatchback. Carry snacks and water, and plan a stop at Kanger Valley National Park on the way back if time allows.
